Sam’s story

Sam is gifted at so many instruments...

Sam started playing cello at age 4, but he wasn’t ready for the challenge.  He tried again when he was 5 and the lights came on.  He progressed quickly and was accepted into the precollege program at Juilliard at age 8 where he was a student of Clara Kim.     Sam continued to work hard and he had many wonderful opportunties at Juilliard.  When he was a junior in high school, he was looking for a change of scenery and enrolled in the Mannes Prep program.  He was founding member of Trio Espressivo, a wonderful piano trio featuring violinist Nick Aper-Vidler and pianist Juan Lazaro, Jr. They performed a great deal in the greater New York area. During his high school years, Sam began to be interested in playing guitar and dedicated a great deal of time to mastering the instrument.  He also picked up bass guitar and has been playing drums for many years.        Following graduation, Sam took a gap year and went to Haiti to teach orphans and street children to sing and read music, as well as play guitar and cello. It was a life changing experience for him and he has returned several times since to follow up on the work that he started.  Sam plays a major role in The Asberry Boys band,  comprised of the four Taubl brothers.  His songwriting and guitar skills are a backbone of the group, and his ability to lay down tracks on so many instruments makes recording a breeze!    The Asberry Boys recently won a local competition “CT’s Got Talent” sponsored by radio station WDRC.  First prize was to be the opening act for Chicago at the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, CT in August, 2013.  They were also chosen as finalists for The River 105.9 Locals Live competition which included an exciting performance at Mohegan Sun.     Sam has written much of the music of the Asberry Boys, and has had some very successful collaborations with his brother Jack.  Their song, Tender, is a crowd favorite and can be purchased on Itunes. He has appeared for the last four years in Long Wharf Theatre’s summer program, Shake It Up Shakespeare, has had lead roles in his high school musicals, and was recently featured in New Haven Theater Company’s rendition of Our Town. Sam now works with underprivileged kids in Waterbury, CT as a lower strings teaching assistant for Bravo Waterbury.  He is also a  sales associate at Sam Ash Music in New Haven.
